As with icons and totems, the spirit of the landscape resides in the painting. With each painting, I re-story a specific place - the Kentucky bottomlands of my childhood, the natural beauty of Maine’s wetlands, the red maple that grows outside my window. For many years, the human figure was absent from my paintings, but in 2020, I returned to my love of figure drawing and began to incorporate people into the landscape. They are ancestors who present themselves as avatars and messengers.
